Tania Whalen is a British ceramic artist currently based in Brooklyn, NY.
Her interest lies in the beauty of raw clay and mark making to add movement and texture to the surface - like water, winds and sand. she draws inspiration from forms in nature, architecture, ancient art, and her travels. creating work for both functionality and beauty, she honors the identity of the medium she works with and aims for a modern sensibility in her work; bridging old with new.
All vessels are hand built primarily employing the pinch & coil method. using this slow hand building technique she takes on a meditative train of thought - hands to clay, instinctive and emotional - a process connecting with the self - past & present.
Irregularities in forms, dimples, drips, and prints on finishes are embraced, adding to the character & beauty of the handmade object, each piece being completely unique.
